    But when I filled in the screen with whole METL or whatever it was 227104. oh and a bonus image

    Fill the screen with METL but remove the walls from the sides first. You'll get 235008.

    Isn't the particle limit unlimited, sorry for stupid wordplay? You can layer particles.

    You can layer them, that's what happens in the first screenshot, buy you still can't create more particles once you have 235008 on screen.
