New Forum Suggestion - Solutions

Have you ever made a help request, and gotten a useful answer that you want others to know?
Have you suggested a feature which was accepted, and you want to let others know that it was accepted?

If so, you're in luck with this suggestion!

This forum suggestion would add "Solution" buttons by each post for the thread creator and moderators (in case they feel that a post is the better solution).
When clicked, the post marked as a "Solution" would gain a special colored border around it.
A counter on each person's profile that keeps track of the amount of posts a user has marked as a solution could be added, too.

To prevent abuse, thread creators cannot mark the thread's first post (which was made by them) as the solution, and a cooldown could be implemented so that a thread creator cannot randomly mark posts as a solution.

That's not true. I would recommend stop saying anything on behalf of moderators/ staff members (it's against the rules too.)

Ok, back on the topic, it's mostly rejected because the site admins don't have the time which is required to implement things like this. It doesn't mean, in any way, that they don't want to add it.

it's been a while since i posted here.

I feel insufficiently good today to say something positive.

    Have a good day!

BokkaB, if you have nothing to add to the conversation, please just don't post anything. Also, there is no need to add "Have a good day! BokkaB" to the end of your comments. It does not contribute to the forums, it does not make anyone feel better, nor does it make you some kind of nice dude. I am aware of the fact that this comment does not contribute to the conversation either, but I had to make this known.

OK well since I do have the ability to contribute, I'll give my feedback -

This is clearly inspired by stackexchange, where you can mark a reply as a solution. There it works pretty well, anyone can give a top level reply, anyone can respond to those replies with feedback to the proposed solution, or even edit the proposed solution. (I don't have a stackoverflow/stackexchange account but I think it works this way)

That works great for them, the site is designed around answers to suggestions. But here, it's not. In fact, this would only work on the "Help", "Feedback", and "Development Assistance" forums. It wouldn't work for threads in "Creations", "Powder Toy Mods", or any others.

The forums give you a flow of conversation, one person responding to everything before them. So the solution could be spread across multiple posts. This differs from stackoverflow, where the post with the checkmark contains everything you need to know, and users will edit the reply. Here on the forums we don't let you edit other people's posts in order to improve or correct the solution. So that's another difference which would make this not really work out.

So BokkaB was right that we'll reject it, but for the wrong reasons. We just don't think this is a good suggestion. And the effort to create it for effectively three subforums is too much.

For now, use the existing karma system if you think a forum post is the solution to a thread - this will highlight it in much the same way as this suggestion.
