I think your problem is that your mods are not compatible with his server. (Derp) perhaps have him clear all of his mods and texture packs and retry, using the same packs. Sometimes (I think) certain packs are non-compatible with each other.

I use mc patcher. Download it, Set it to HD textures and you should be good. it is extreamly useful for easy mod adds and what not! I'll presume magiclauncher is like it.

Just so you know, mc.jar can still be corrupted. I use ML myself and have had this problem.

Maybe try not using magic launcher and actually modify minecraft.jar, it could be a problem with magic launcher.

Clean or not, delete it still. It may have been corrupted by a bad exit, which is what happened to mine. I've been using MagicLauncher since I discovered it and have had this problem at least twice due to texture pack fails. As Nike say, just do it (tm)
