That means you managed to spawn some GoL that doesn't know what the ruleset should be. This GoL tends to appear white.

All GoL elements, despite appearing as separate "elements" in the menu, are actually just the same type, with ctype controlling the ruleset.

If you can, tell us the steps you followed that made this appear.

Sounds like you may have created some stamps in a mod that includes 97.0 features. Saving elements such as PIPE and STOR inside a recent mod or TPT Snapshot can trigger this issue.

There isn't much you can do, avoid saving important stamps inside mods in the future.

Any element can have deco color applied. Some won't display it in their graphics (many types of gases do this), but it's not a bug that you are able to paint these.
