It's for the best. Not using new features doesn't mean that there aren't any other differences that would cause problems.
I'm saving tests locally with a "beta" prefix on the file name. I renamed the new Powder executable and put a backup copy of the old version back in the same folder so I can use both interchangeably. That way I can still upload, or modify older saves, and still test the beta. Not sure how well this would go over in today's Windows, but it is still possible to download the old stable version if you need to change back or try dual-Powdering.
I've been doing beta testing of interesting software for longer than a lot of TPT users have been breathing air. So I always back up the old when trying the new. ;)
