It has nothing to do with the smoke, it's the heating process. Heat is what changes COAL's color. Place some COAL, use HEAT on it until it turns orange, then COOL. It will never become darker than grey. In real life, once you burn coal, it is a light grey, not it's original color. This is not a bug, it is a visual addition to TPT.
