I really don't know what people like, but try looking at what's on FP. You could get inspired to make something.
80-90% of this is dislike trolls
I've had a few saves where they got downvoted without really any comments, so I can understand why you might be more irritated by that, but you kind of just have to power through it, think bigger on the next save idea and such. People like designs with carefully planned out element reactions and such, maybe.
You could try designing some complex technology, or try pursuing ideas relating to new elements that nobody's tried before, but I think people choose to downvote because they have, well, opinions on what might be considered good or bad. As I said though, try pursuing ideas relating to new elements. For example, hydrogen fuel power cells or generators, or lithium powered weaponry.
