If its oval... you did something.. its normal. -
It works fine with a mouse. I use my touch pad and it dos'nt work right, it works on older versions of powder toy

Get one of those plug-in mice. -

Get a USB mouse, plug it in to one of the USB ports on your laptop (I'm guessing you have one, you said touch pad), use the mouse = Job done. Also, if it went oval, you pressed SHIFT or CTRL then scrolled.
Or, you could just use [ or ] to change brush size, but remember to not use CTRL or SHIFT unless you want it oval. -

Or, if you have brush shape issues then either scroll it or ctrl/shift-scroll it. If you can't draw elements, either prass the Caps Lock(if there is an [CAP LOCKS] text) or Insert(if there is an [REPLACE MODE] text)
