Also on the topic of signs, I think you should be able to make signs pointing in all directions, not just down. Maybe, when you place a sign, you click where you want the line to point to, and then click where the sign should go.

This complicates the save format, which just keeps track of a save's "justification" and position, instead of two interlinked positions. -

it also overcomplicates placing signs too ... I don't see the point because where a sign is pointing means almost nothing. Also the place the sign is drawn is calculated based on position and justification, so having that be a separate thing you can set would be a problem. -
If you're using signs to label things, it matters where they are pointing. At least it should be possible to make signs without the line, so you can draw your own
Plus, signs already can point up, if you make them at the top of the screen.

Sorry for the necro, but I really like OP's idea of search signs, I'll probably be adding that in my mod's next updatw

I really the idea where you can search a user( {s:user:Bob|My other saves} ). This would remove the need to make tons of "My homepage Page 1...Page 2...3...4...5...6..."

I added the 'None' justification for the next version which should allow that. It's really center justification but it doesn't draw the line: https://github.com/simtr/The-Powder-Toy/commit/5caf8bc8e18633660b86a28fde6b148e3e4326e1
Also a limit of 45 characters now (+ 50 pixel wider sign ui), which is longer than you can currently type unless you only type i's.
