Well, from what I understand, those are probably some of the only ways to layer elements and such. I'd say at a guess there's a layering mod that might be what you're looking for, but I don't dabble in mods or anything so I wouldn't know where to look.

There's a script for it, Layer Helper Reforged, to be exact, but if you don't want to use a script, then use the console, energy particles(requires god skill without console), or ehole

use either layering helper or prop tool

you can use the command line and put down a line on a x axis, but only have 5 as 6 makes BHOL. so after that do !set x all [put x position here] and it collects all the pixels and put them on the x axis. and there you have it!
