    If there is a tornado watch in your area at night, you should temporarily leave windows and doors open. You'll hear the tornado long before you see it. It should sound something like a fast-moving freight train.

    For tornadoes, a general rule is that if you can see it and you're in a wooded area or place where the horizon is obscured, it's too late and you need to take shelter IMMEDIATELY. If you can see it far off in an open area, you should still take shelter but you likely have more time.
