Cosmicsans is absolutely right. They basically thought that the explosion would trigger a chain reaction, igniting the oxygen and nitrogen in the atmosphere, which would set the planet on fire, which would obviously end the world. As you can see by looking litteraly anywhere in the world, that didn't happen. -
