    even in a vacuum there is still the interstellar cloud of hydrogen and dust which will produce radiation and give the ship a sand blasting from hell

    unless you're in the vacuum of space where there's no matter to collide with.

    Anything at light speed collides with normal matter at such speeds that it would disintegrate very quickly.
