Ivy MIKE was the worlds first hydrogen bomb. This is a replica of it.
The spectators of its explosion had to wear goggles to protect their eyes from the light. The bomb works by forcing together hydrogen to form helium. Large amounts of energy is generated in this process. On November the 1st, 1952, Ivy MIKE was detonated destroying the island it was based on.
The bomb was detonated via a radio relay. The radio relay triggered explosives up in the top of the bomb. The sock waves were enough to force neutrons out of the centre of a trigger. Only a few dozen neutrons were created, this number was magnified by the the surrounding fuel. This fuel soon burst out of it's casing. The powerful shock was then deflected down into a uranium spark plug along with another shock from pentane gas. The detonation of the uranium was enough to force deuterium into tritium.
