It's based entirely on the real thing.

To detonate:
1.Spark the safety pin.
2.Spark the detonate leaver.

When you spark the safety pin some fuse evaporates to plasma, the fuse originally blocked the path of a some bray. Once the detonate is sparked the bray can now come through. The bray then sets off the rest.
