Please dont flame this subject, as all i want to know is if it would be possible to integrate 3D into TPT. I dont mean in a week, a month, etc i'm just curious as to whether it could possibly be done.
Hell yes it will be laggy, unless the new multithreading that Simon was talking about gets implemented and shows a large increase in FPS.... Or unless a new system allows for it without being like 1 FPS
Maybe not 3D, but multiple layers of TPT sessions, including special walls (up/down holes) to allow these layers to communicate. You could build pipes for liquid/gas, multilayer electronics etc.
You would have a layer up/down UI button to jump between the layers. A popup menu in the style of the element selection would show miniviews of the layers and would allow direct selection. A hotkey (page up/down) would allow simple mouseless layer switching. You would have a single layer/multilayer/half visible on top/half visible below, 4-way view toggle which would allow you to view the layer you work on, all layers stacked on each other and your layer in full view, the others in half transparent mode either above or below your layer to make sure you align your layers correctly.
You could also have two checkboxes below each layer in the layer popup menu and switch them to half transparent/full/hidden and on top/below.
2 layers already would be a huge step and that would easily be scalable for the jump to real MULTI-layer creations. When TPT goes OpenCL and multithread, this would be a lovely extension.

There is no going OpenCL. Currently the idea has been put on ice.
Hopefully in the future it can be unfrozen again Any info on why it was put on ice? Layers sounds like a good idea and once the bugs have been worked out, would be interesting to see the jump to true 3d, such as revolving around the simulation to check various parts, etc. Could be interesting for a very future project
I know someone metioned this before but I've thought about it for a while, I'd like for the physics engine to be rewritten (hopefully it doesn't take that long) or at least add a special 'gravity' physics layer with a butotn to turn it on and off (like heat) that when you build a building or something and it breaks or whatever at the bottom, it would fall down or collapse instead of being stuck in the same position.
