Self-Voting Crack Down

I don't like self-voting either. I think it's equivalent to cheating during a Chess game.

Off-topic: Don't ban me for this, but I want a better explanation for Rule #1:

About Guideline #1: WHY on Earth do you not allow "Image plotting"? Why do you give them a ban instead of giving them a warning? You should give Rule #1 a better, more detailed, description. What is wrong with image plotting ANYWAY?! I don't see anything wrong with it, especially if the source image is Public Domain (no copyright). Do you consider it spam?

The reason it's an issue is chiefly because it's 'cheating' in in-game votes - Just like signs that ask for votes, in the past they turned out to be far too easy to get mass quantities of votes from people. A simple image of a penguin would get 300+ votes in a week while a nearby 4-bit processor would get nothing.

...Also, this is a Falling Sand CA slash Physics game, not "Vote on art that people used an application to create."

Because the server is for sharing things made in Powder Toy, not for sharing images. If you want to share images, there are whole websites dedicated to allowing you to do just that. Also, Powder Toy saves are not a very good image format, there are much better ones available (PNG, JPEG, etc).

It takes up space, and is not the intended purpose of the server. So yeah, a bit spammy.

(Yes, I am aware that much the same argument can be applied to art in general, which is why I tend to demote it from the front page if it's non-functional. But we don't ban for art in general.)

Edit: also, yes, what Catelite said - image plotting does tend to get an unreasonable amount of votes and displace saves that actually use features of the game.

I think you should give the "Image plotters" a warning instead of a ban. You need to give them a chance to apologize!

That's what I usually do, I will delete any saves (or just disable) and give them a warning. If they have a lot and seem to know the rule exists I will probably ban them instead, but remember that bans can and usually are just temporary, it's not a big deal and sometimes serves as the warning.

Someone like FeynmanTechnologies was banned maybe 3 times for image plotting and constantly lied about whether he was doing it (ex. coming on irc and making a complete font for someone in 10 minutes, then saying he's just really fast at making them). In his case we did end up perm banning him twice.

Back before I was a moderator they used to be extreme in bans, ex. someone thought they weren't breaking any rules and then found themselves perm banned. You shouldn't have to worry about that though, just never use any cgi programs, you don't need them and they don't fit on the server. You already know it's against the rules anyway.

They are still responsible. It is expected everyone reads the rules when they sign-up. Therefore if you didn't and still broke a rule, there is no excuse.

whenever a save is made it automatically puts one upvote for some reason; should I try to downvote my creations so I don't get in trouble?
