This would mean buffering the current element until you exit Find mode, which in turn would mean being unable to change "target" elements with a single click, requiring two instead. Instead, if you wanted to use a tool while in Find mode, you could assign said tool to the right mouse button (right-click the tool in question instead of left-clicking it). This unassigns the Delete tool (first tool in Special) from your right mouse button though, so you'll have to assign it back once you're done.

That said, I'm not sure how this would allow for "more informed tuning", but I don't have to in order to answer the question.
