use replace mode, hit insert button and try it out.

Hit the insert button on your keyboard, it is above the arrow keys, this will activate "Replace Mode" select an element, draw somthing, select another element, hit insert, and draw over it, and try drawing out in the open with replace mode, it wont draw, hit insert to deactivate replace mode
