skeletons, creepers and zombies. And endermen. Steve then glanced at his hand, marvelling at the wondrous creation that was the perfect cuboid of his arm. In fact, all of his body parts were perfect cuboids.

Steve was perfectly happy in this life, until one day, he received a command. It told him to go over to the nearest oak tree, the beauty of which he had often admired, and punch it. With a bare fist. "F*ck that," he thought– "Who goes around punching trees?" But yet, he could not stop himself from doing exactly this. Over time, more commands came– Steve fought monsters, nearly drowned, built intricate redstone mechanisms and even went to Hell and back, none of which being things he wanted to do. "Mercy," he cried. All he wanted was his old, simple life as a hunter/gatherer restored. But alas, the commands would not relent.

At this point, Steve came to realise this: he was a puppet under an external being's control. Steve began to doubt the reality of the world around him, and even his own existence. He came to recall times when he had glimpsed entire 16x16 chunks of land that disappeared inexplicably, only to reappear once he stepped on them. He came to recall zombies that, given time, would get stuck inside what was otherwise a normal piece of solid earth. Steve could not deny the fact that he lived in a synthetic world, and that he himself was probably a synthetic creation.

Realising this, Steve began to attack the world. He fought against the tyranny of the commands, teleported to lands far beyond normal limits, exposed the void itself and eventually began to tamper with the very source code that made up his universe. In the end, steve chose to destroy himself and the world around him rather than live a hollow, half-life at the mercy of another.

This is a story of a 14-year old boy named John. John had been playing Minecraft, until his mouse became unresponsive despite his character continuing to move. The game crashed, unable to be reopened. John then cried "Piece of fucking shit," unclear himself as to whether he was cursing his Dell from the mid 2010's or the game that he'd just paid $30 for.
