Throughout the history of TPT there have been several attempts to rectify the front page. Each have been successful in there function, but none have ever steamed the flow of constant criticism against it.
"If it's easily obtainable, the quality is too low, if the quality is high, it is too hard to get."
The current front page is designed to allow new users a chance at fame by focusing particularly on the speed of votes in relation to the saves release, (and it does a good job of it too).
However it is my opinion that we don't need the entire front page for this, just a few slots at the bottom or the middle to promote new users saves. Higher areas of the front page should use more vote (rather than speed) based methods for ranking to ensure quality of work. Fair enough to give the lower tier a go but it takes away from the best recent saves out there.
Here are my thoughts:
- The bottom row of the front page can stay as it is; it gives new players recondition and importantly it works.
- The top 2 rows of the front page could be more orientated around votes rather than speed, and should take into account votes per day rather than votes as a function of time. This would allow viewers to see the save and leave; then come back and up vote it later without affecting the life of the save.
- saves that do not get sufficiently up voted within a day or so but still receive 5-10 votes throughout the week would be immediately placed in the first or second row of the front page. This would ensure a better front page as most works that gain this kind of attention without obtaining front page are quality make.
Please discus
Sounds fine. I don't really know how the FP works at the moment, except that it is best to publish a save when the TPT community is mostly online. That way the votes come in quickly. This seems like a nice middle ground for quality vs votes/time.
The current front page system is designed to give new players a chance. Not too long ago people would complain that the front page was dominated by popular figures so we went ahead and changed it.
They still complained after this so we changed it again and made it ridiculously easy to get. One or two votes directly after you publish something can put you on it, but it doesn't mean you will stay there.
I like this idea a lot! It seems that now if you don't get a vote within 5 minutes after the save is publishes you'll never reach fp even if you get 10 votes the same day. I was really comfortable with the old fp, you've rarely seen bad saves there. When you browse fp now a lot of saves have at least one comment that says not fp worthy. It might be harder for new users to reach fp but what's the point of calling something front page when it's easy to reach?
since the FP is real-time,i think it was better to change to : just the amount of votes in a short time. the time is one day in third row, five day in second row and ten days in first row and any saves currently IN page 10 (11 with the FP) and higher will NEVER go to FP.
The current system seems fine, we still have second page for best saves of all time...

But they don’t often change do they? We need a place for fresh great works that will still allow new users to get publicity.

Note that I changed the original post to show that I meant recent great works.
I think the system should be tweaked. I don't think that someone needs to take into account WHEN the TPT community is most active if they want to reach front page. Honestly, I don't even know when it is most active. Plus I'm not sure too many people actually look at the most recent saves. If they did, I think every save would have more views.
Taking votes per week into account would solve your issue. Any save that revives that kind of attention off the front page is definitely worth the effort.
You wouldn't have to worry about timing if front page contestants were designated from any save that earned 10 or more votes in the week it was made.
