making comments a neccesity for -1 ing

I have a feeling first amendment issues may arise, however... When a save is given a +1 it tends to explain itself. Approval.  When a save is given a -1 without comment, one knows not if the "downer" (trademark) is simply hating, or if an actual issue is noticed.  Would a necessity for a comment to accompany any -1 before voting be too onerous?  A standard set of codes to represent "ish" or "stupid" or "broken" or "unoriginal" or "stolen" as a minimum could be a simple way for a person who feels those, or other reasons, are enough to -1.  Those comments, maybe represented by a single digit code, would give a clue as to what to do to improve, or defend, ones save.  Others may use the opportunity to make more detailed corrective suggestions.  This would be a way for the user to separate problems from problem makers.  Haters from makers.  Hate doesn't halt me, I just want to know why "downers" (trademaked) -1.  I want to get better, not bummed out.  I know.  I know.  "Just suck it up."  waaah

I bet this would lead to a ton of blank dummy comments, though.

If hate doesn't halt you, then why do you care about downvotes so much? I mean, judging from your word choice of "haters" and "downers",you really seem to think those -1s are personal  (they're not.just because they downvoted you doesn't mean they neccesarily dislike you).

Mabye when you downvote, a menu comes up where you select why you downvoted, with a comment box for extra stuff?

By "downers" I mean those who vote down.  Not as a negative or insult, simply as a designator.  I would call those who up vote "uppers".  Nobody here knows me so nothing they say CAN be personal.  By haters i mean those who vote down not on the merits of the save, but just 'cause.  And I do care about the downers because they may have valid points.  I just want a way to glean the wisdom of the crowd from the hmmm... icky poo poo meanies.  Pardon my coarse language.   DOM2MOM, I like the drop down idea a lot.

If you give a reason like 'cuz y not' or 'lololol' or something that isn't a good reason or isn't worth a downvote then there should be a report button that shows a moderator the reason and they decide if it is a good reason or not and they choose whether to remove the downvote or not. That would discourage haters but not people downvoting for a good reason.

     What would be better:
    No downvotes

If you dont like it, dont upvote it.

In my opinion I would rather convert the system to a 1-5 rating system, then average those out. Having people give reasons for down votes is a bit too much of a hassle.

A star rating system would be indeed convenient if at all. I prefer the upvoting system right now due to its relative simplicity. Imagine placing _five_ star buttons instead of up/down on the UI.

It could be replaced with a tab that you mouse over and the five stars appear.
