I just remembered about a project, named Sagan IV, that involved people creating an alien ecosystem that started from a single-celled species. People would then create evolutions from that, and re-iterate that process over many generations.

There's hundreds or maybe thousands of creatures that have been created by users....there's nearly 150+ generations all of which have at least around 15 animals for every generation
