    Scenario

1 . Lets say john gets banned and makes another account.

2 . Lets say he then gets ip banned for ban avoidance.

3 . He then changes his external ip and static ip.

4 . He then boots up his computer again and makes another account

    Conclusion

John has avoided all his bans and is now ready to start doing banworth

    stuff again.

Great! You thought at a 2nd grade level. Now solve the time-travel paradox.

(BTW, they can just keep banning him...)

If it becomes a big issue you can always ban the entire subnet, which no amount of modem resetting will change beyond.  Of course then there are proxies...

Bans on any service work like this, most people don't care enough(or know how) to evade.

Yeah, we can see accounts right as they come in through the IRC, and any associated accounts. Doesn't stop people from ban evading, but I mean, what are they gonna do, spam? =/

    1. MAC addresses can be spoofed VERY easily.
    2. MAC addresses are only accessible from the local network.

Static IPs are pretty much IP addresses that don't change, like the ones older networks have. Newer ones are all dynamic IPs, so they change their IP every once in a while (From an automatic collection of IP addresses they can take)

Bottom line: There is always a way around any system, and this one is no exception.

It's a very rare occasion that an IP ban is issued, and if I remember correctly in all the time I've been here, there has only ever been 1 IP ban issued.

Users will always evade bans, if their attitude doesn't change then we'll keep banning them. If their attitude changes and they wise up, for forget about it. A couple of well known users are ban-evaders technically, one of them was a real pain in the ass too. They learned their lesson and behaved themselves.

Heh, I'm a hassle on IRC, but on the forum I'm generally a good member. Never evaded a ban from the forum but I've evaded countless IRC bans.
