Facebook did it, I despised Facebook the entire time.
It's reasonable, but I'd prefer notifications when you've been "replied to".

If you have ever been to a site like the Skyrim Nexus where they keep mods their forums are set up so that you can pick which topics you want updates from and the ones you don't

There already is an envelope when you get a convo. It seems to not display on everyone...
I had in mind it'd be added to the overall notification count.

Thanks @nmd and @Dawgie for convoing me in need, I got some testing done and Simon made the site hand out an array for anyone to parse in userscripts. :)

no, as in, if we'd get notifications for each post, where would it be sent, email?

it would be very annoying if it were emailed to you... the inbox would get filled up rather quickly

That's why I think a feed would be better for this kind of thing...
