When you're into the group's page, can you see the little resign button next to the create new topic one? You click that.

Well, the problem is, I never was never responded to in first place and so I can't get on to the page.

Go on the group page and click on the button in the group description and then click on cancel registration (or something similar)

I cannot guarantee the steps will all be like that, but it's roughly like i described
