Reddit is a link sharing site.
It divides itself into sub-reddits which are organized by category, in this case /r/aww (for cute animal pics) and /r/kittens (smaller kitten sub-reddit) (Subreddits are prefixed with /r/ because that's what their URL will be like when added to "http://reddit.com" -> "http://reddit.com/r/aww").

Usually, bigger sub-reddits (>10k subscribers) move faster and get better content more often.

There are rage comics (/r/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu, /r/classicrage), various news(/r/politics, /r/news, /r/technology, /r/science, /r/worldnews), ask X subreddits (/r/AskReddit, /r/askscience), image reddits (SFWPorn network /r/EarthPorn/, /r/pics, /r/birdswitharms) and awesome parody reddits such as /r/circlejerk, (Shitty network) /r/shittyaskscience, ...)

Every post can be commented and voted upon, your comments can be replied to(Threaded conversation) and comments also voted on. Posts divide into two: self posts(Text posts, votes will not up your karma score) and link posts.

Users collect "karma" which is a total of their comment/link votes.
