In Windows (I think it works in 7 as well as XP) -
Right click on the folder you want compressing.
Click Send to -> Compressed (zipped) folder

Yes, right click the files and send it to compressed (zipped) folder.

If you're doing it for a texture pack then it has to have a certain layout (the content)
