In old versions, there was no actual limit on frame rate. However, the FPS counter would only increment every 16ms. This gave a maximum displayed FPS of approximately 62. (This also prevented it from counting all frames, sometimes resulting in very inaccurate measurements.)
In the current stable version, the FPS counter works correctly. There is a 5ms delay per frame if the frame rate is predicted to go over 60. On very fast computers, this delay is not large enough to keep frame rate at 60.
