Whenever I downloaded myself a Linux distro, I used Linux Mint. It uses Gnome as its desktop environment, as Ubuntu uses a new desktop environment called Unity, it has become a little bit more awesome.
I'm using PCLinuxOS (a distro derivated from Mandriva), that uses KDE as desktop; it's easy to install and even easier to use. I never had problems with it.
