Yes, in fact, there's some new stuff available for Lua. https://powdertoy.co.uk/Wiki/W/Powder_Toy_Lua_API.html

BTW, Powdersim is NOT going to be going to the wayside. We are going to be getting it ported to the C++ version as soo as we can. There is no need to worry about mods not being made and ported to the C++ version. If anything, they will be better than the current mods now.

I agree, mods will have the potential to be better. Making new elements is much easier and less likely to create errors since it's harder to do things wrong. I'm also porting my mod to tpt++/improving tpt++ myself for the official version. Mods that do many complicated things besides elements will be harder to make though, but if it's mostly elements and edits to powder.c or graphics stuff, those are all easy to port without much work. The Distiller's Mod is also being ported to c++ already. Most other mods are already discontinued unfortunately.

I would hope lots of cool new elements are added in the future like it used to be. Simon said he wanted to increase the element limit from 256 to 512, which is now easier to do with tpt++. He also said he wanted lua elements to be included with saves, and I think this virtual machine stuff is replacing that and would be easier with less chance of actual viruses.

Edit: I was checking the dates on the saves, and it looks like a lot of people did leave. Last year, there was a large boost of saves in the summer that didn't happen this year. Now school has started, and the drop of players still happened (maybe even during the summer too). By now, we should be at 1000000, but we aren't yet. A graph would be nice...

    1 - July 2010 //first forum post date
    100000 - Jan 2011 //half a year to get popular
200001 - Mar 2011 //every 1.5 months per 100000, this summer was the fastest rate of saving so far
    300000 - Apr 2011
    400000 - Jun 2011
    500000 - Sept 2011 //Slight drop, now every 2.5 months per 100000
    600001 - Nov 2011
------------------------------650000 - Dec 2011 //I started going by .5 months here, but it's still the same rate
    700000 - Feb 6 2012
    ------------------------------750002 - March 19 2012
    800000 - April 28 2012
    ------------------------------850001 - June 8 2012
900000 - July 22 2012 //it's summer, but the rate of saves is going down to 3 months per 100000
    ------------------------------948775 - Sept 15 2012
------------------------------Dec 31 2012 - if we keep the same number of people as 2011, we should be at 1300000 here, but i'm not sure that will happen
