true, the layer could even only support some elements, and not even simulate them, just display them...

It wouldn't need any calculation apart from standard placing

That'd be great for pixel art that you can unpause.

I wouldn't mind seeing this, the lag problem could easily be fixed i think. Since what creates the lag is the elements actions, the decoration layer would not have the effect because the elements actions would be disabled. The only thing that would be there would be the color of the element. I like the idea and hope it will be implemented.
