I would do the git thing, since you are going to be installing it anyway, and it's better to get it using the git command. (the .zip is only for visual studio, since that guide doesn't have you install git ... yet)


But remember that compiling is very, very hard. Especially your first time, when you don't know what anything or any error means. Also if you don't know c or c++ you are going to have a lot of trouble adding elements this way, probably from lua would be better since lua is easier to learn and you don't have to compile it or install any extra programs.
