Make heat view (pressing 6) an on/off toggle.

Hi. I'm super annoyed and pissed at how the new display options work right now.

If I'm playing powder for example, and I have a bunch of custom options I've made for myself for that specific moment for a specific purpose, in the display options menu, I want to keep them. Like if I'm playing a save, in 'alternate pressure view' but with glow and blur on, and that's the way I like it. There is no problem if I close the game and come back and whatnot because it stays like that.

The problem is the way things like heat view and life view and stuff are being handled right now. If I want to switch to heat view, and keep whatever changes I've made such as glow and blur, I have to click the display panel which PAUSES the sim, click heat view, click into the sim and it unpauses. To turn it off I do the same thing again, ie. pause and unpause. All my custom changes are still where they should be, this is inefficient because the whole point is that I want it to check in heat view in real time, without a bunch of interruptions.

You'd say 'but just press 6 and you'll go into heat view!' correct. I could press 6 and go into heat view in a split second and just alternate that way by pressing 0 to go back to 'alternate pressure view', but not really. Because when you do that, all your changes aren't saved. By switching to heat view in this manner, all your changes get lost because you switch between 2 pre-set views.

So, why not make it the best of both worlds? Make pressing 6 the same way as poking the heat view button in the display menu, without the added fuss and pausing/unpausing, so we could press 6 AGAIN and switch OUT of the heat view, which reverts back to whatever custom view we were in. All in split-second real time.

Sorry if this sounds too complicated but it's a pretty big usability issue imo, I want to be able to move fast and quick along with whatever is happening in my sim without having to always pause and unpause just to do something simple that was possible before we had all the new display menu (which is a good thing don't get me wrong, it's not convenient though).

What would happen if the game remembered any display mode changes after you'd pressed 1 on the keyboard?

So for example, if you turn on blur mode when you push 1, and push 2, and then push 1
Then blur will still be checked \o

So basically pressing 6 doesn't change the display mode, it just toggles a display feature?

There's nothing wrong with that....even better. It will all be up to the user. You can't really say 'what if they don't like it anymore!' because if it remembers anything you save then you'll always alter it to suit yourself.

The whole point of this is to use the already functioning 'heat view toggle' in the display panel without the added fuss. When you press 6 would be the same thing as pressing that button, and pressing 6 again would be the same as well, turning it off. Going back to whatever 'view' you were in, regardless if you had changes to it or not.

Yes! The functionality is there, just 50x more convenient that pressing 6 is toggling it rather than changing the views all together and all/any changes you may have made. Before the new display menu, if I wanted to check it all in heat view, and was in alternate pressure view, I would just press 6, then when done I would just press 0 again, plain and simple. I could do it as fast/slow as I wished. Convenient. You could apply the same thing for heat gradient mode view display, whatever you want to call it, when pressing 9.

Think of it as having your glasses, and just pressing a switch on them to make you see differently. You don't change your whole glasses you just change the lens or whatever temporarily.

When I press 6, I expect all of the fancy graphics to go away and be just like nothing mode with heat displayed. This would make it harder to do that, and now I would have the same problem as you. But maybe I could make Ctrl + any number to toggle displays like you want, that would be pretty useful. If I added it to my mod, it might get into the official, because it was me that re-added in the number keys after Simon removed them, and he put that into the official.

@jacob1 (View Post) There already is a nothing view though. This works the same way it does in the display panel, just more convenient. This wouldn't affect people who use any of the default presets (removing all the fancy effects, assuming they're custom), for you, you'd just press 6 when you want to go to heat view, then press it again to go back to whatever you were using, or press 8 to go into nothing view, as you say, all the fancy effects going away. At that point it's your prerogative whatever you do with whatever display options you want to choose.

Will try bugging about this, it's probably already on queue (or something similar), but never hurts.
