i remember looking at this stuff in wikipedia, i think begin is the amount of neighbors required to be alive(e.g. b23 means that it can be alive at 2 and 3 neighbors?), and stay is the amount to live, and is represented by each digit being its own amount it can live at. some like star have ending numbers that are the number of states
