Multistage heat exchanger efficiently transfers FIRE heat to a coolant (MERC). The fuel is also preheated before ignition. Efficiency is determined by the heat of the exhaust, which is essentially how much heat was wasted and not completely used.

@kamilsap that's a good attempt, but doing so quickly drops the efficiency. An effective water boiler should also be built into stages like the heater. Have water flow down and the coolant flow up in the middle, then use liquid-only walls on the outside to allow steam to escape.
