    On the other hand if you use an ethanol thermometer and it broke in there then the patient might get slightly drunk if it's deep enough in that the ethanol will get absorbed.

    actually metallic mercury won't have much effect because the skin (including internal skin) is very poor at absorbing metallic mercury. Murcury compounds on the other hand are extremely poisonous because we can absorb them easily.
