    No, the fuse (We have these fuse-breaker hybrid reuseable fuses) didn't trip that I'm aware. And the electrician we called said, point blank, "All of the outlets here are dead".

    And what do we learn from this, always check the voltage before messing around with anything, did it trip the breaker by the way?

    And yeah, it was just the supply line for one of those long cylinder-shaped lights you see in hospitals and offices. Most certainly fluorescent.

    Yeah, the UK has much higher voltages. You can also have 220V in the US, if you know how to do it. Which I do.
