The 866A is a mercury vapor rectifier. This, in a nutshell means that the current is carried through the mercury vapor. The tube, when in operation glows bluish because the mercury atoms get excited, when they receive and release electrons.

    A quick note, if you own one DO NOT apply the plate voltage before the mercury has compeletely vaporized, as there is a serious risk of arcing.
