inspired by a save made by HapyMetal (ID:1958076) i would like to point out that this is how the sails should be set on your dutch sloop rig, the way it's drawn in the save would result in an incredibly slow ship.

But this is how i was taught to set the sails to run with the wind, and generally i found the jib was quite capable of ballancing out the mainsail. Especially if there was a spinnaker up as well.

Does this type of vessel not have a keel? (never sailed aboard a sloop rig myself, only helmed conventional triangular single masts of various sizes between small daggerboard dinghies (laser2000 mostly) and a 10 meter yaght i have forgotten the name of.

The gaff sail isn't turned so far sideways when the wind is coming directly from astern, cause that would force the ship into a hard turn setting the rudder under high pressure. Better 30 or 45 degrees into the wind, so that the ship rolls to that side using the headsails and the rudder to balance the ship. When i've learned how to make 3-D pictures, i will fix that. ;-)
