    I remember spending months designing one of these things (also for AS Physics, as it happens!). When I first started on TPT I thought about trying to build one, but at te time didn't have the technical skills to do it. Now, I do, and I think I can make some improvements to your design if you've no objections?

    @sprouted: works with anything. thats how sails work, just with wind instead of photons

    im doing this at the moment in as level physics. it uses the momentum of photons to increase the momentum of the sail. i have also read the book though, so i sort of know it.

    They're in very early stages. They can go very very fast, it just takes them a long time to get there. They also have difficulty dealing with gravitational "mud" between planets at early stages of acceleration.

    They have actually succeeded in building these. They are called Solar Sails and they are used very effectively as high-speed propulsion
