People make working engines mainly to give their ships more functionality, In space battles you can tell if a ship can move or not, it also makes ships more realistic and can give the challenge of protecting explosive fuel when making the ship. -

Well what's the point in making almost complex 'engines' that look really ugly when solids in tpt don't actually move unless made into a huge moving piston. Besides they all still shoot and damage. They can and are fun to blow up and can make for, like you said, great decorations? -
