    nice waste of money

I wanted the fastest single-thread CPU and that was it, so...

    Intel i5-4690k @ 3.50GHz. Not that bad.

They are quad-cores with hypertreading (fix), not 8 cores.

And the Intel Core i7-4790K has basically the highest single thread performance; https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html.

I have an i7-3770K, 4.2Ghz (100*42x), which for me is definitely not a waste as I regularly use the CPU at 100% for longer periods of time.

i7s are not the fastest singlethreaded CPU, that's their design
they're meant to be the fastest 8-core cpus but 8 cores is a waste in the modern world

The 4790k outbenches all the other CPUs in single-threaded apps from the benchmarks I've seen. Also the 4790k is one of the cheapest i7s

Yes indeed you are right, that is what I meant, hyperthreading.
The difference seems indeed small, it might be about zero actually if you correct for the difference in frequency (ballpark).

I often use all the "cores", but it is for datamining/classification/visualisation, so I am not really a mainstream user.
