As the plane approaches the speed of light, it begins to undergo nuclear fusion with the atoms in the air, releasing high energy radiation. After just a few microseconds, the entire plane has been vaporized. This would appear as a blinding turquoise flash of light, followed by a tremendous shockwave and the formation of a mushroom cloud. The speed of sound would not suffer from this limitation, since the individual atoms are not moving anywhere near that fast, like an electrical signal which moves at nearly the speed of light, but the actual electrons only move a few centimeters per hour.
