It's similar to facebook because of the new *vote this post up for no f**king reason* function. It behaves like the Like button on facebook.
Exactly.
Plenty of sites have a friend feature, I wouldn't say they are all social networks. And EqualsThree, you just complained about something that has nothing to do with friends :P
I asked how are friends too similar to Facebook, and then you start giving some crap response complaining about the vote up function? Hm....
In my opinion, friends would be somewhat useful if you do it a certain way. If TPT for instance made it to where multiple people could work on a creation at the same time, a friends list would be valuable. You could see who is online and have them help you out with something or even just send them a quick message that they would be able to see immediately.
Thing is, I am not a newb by any means. We also have a lot of the things needed for it in place. We could use the conversations tab to send messages to friends but in the conversations tab, it would show what friends are online. There were a lot of people who rejected groups hard as well but it managed to be included into the site, same with forum voting. Now as you can see, apperently, there are uses for both of those things and I think there would be a use for a friends system as well. I remember when I made a creation a long time ago, I had to make another account (with permission from the moderators of course) so that a friend and I could work on a creation together. It was horrible because we couldn't work on it at the same time. We had to work in shifts to get what we wanted done and there were a lot of problems that could have been resolved a lot faster if we were able to work on the same creation at the same time. With this friend system, (if they program it correctly) that could be possible. There probably should be a limit on how many friends a person could have like xbox live has, (100) that way it doesn't overload the server but I seriously think it would be an awesome implementation to the forums and TPT. Imagine someone like Busydb and minshooz getting together and making a creation. It would be a lot easier with they way I suggested it above. And there would be a lot more people with abilities because they get help from friends.

You are right about the freeware, but as far as the online feature, it isn't as hard as the moveable solids feature. The server would have to be more powerful but of course, but if I am not mistaken, TPTPP will be on a more powerful server in the first place. I am not saying that the online feature would have to be implemented right away, but it would be nice to eventually have that feature on TPT. For now though, a simple friend feature would be nice so you could at least know when they are online. That wouldn't be hard to implement at all. I have that implemented on my website.
