Great idea.
It could be a button somewhat similar to the faves button to go to the publications that your have favorited except it would have author's names instead of publications and when you click on a name it automatically puts the "user:__" into the search box w/ the author's name.
Authors could be favorited or "subscribed to" by clicking a button the same way that you would favorite a publication. -
Maybe a little box could appear next to a users name. If you already have subscribed to that user press the [-] (Remove) button to remove from your list. If you want to subscribe to that user press the [+] (Add or Subscribe) button.
