Well, in real life carbon
does
melt at 3550°C, but this is tpt:

it would be nice if coal were to react with lava as it does with fire, but not with tempurature.

Coal melting might happen in the future. Burning when touching lava, maybe. At the moment it's important for a reaction with iron lava though, and coal isn't even the same temperature melting IRL as lava starts out as in TPT
