Alright, I don't think we would put that much strain on the server, as a chat is minimal compared to the other tasks it must accomplish.
I suggest a non-signup nick name based chat(we have hundreds of users who don't even know there are forums or don't have accounts, and probably wouldn't use them either way.)

I have heard that Freenode do a web-plugin thingy for their irc service. There could be a link to the chat feature on the top of the website
