You can build a PC for a lot cheaper and run OS X on it if one really wants. Macs use the same hardware as a PC especially since they moved from Motorola processors.

There is still the free Avast version. Avast is good. AVG used to be good back in the day, but it has a lot of false positives and actually missed a real trojan on a friend's computer.
