after that they tied in the story with half life (xen crystals and border world) and portal. as you know black mesa discovered the border world but aperture was the first to extract xen crystals out of the

actually according to valve the portal story came first but half life was built on top of quake. valve did not know that many people were going to purchase it so they made half life 2.

is half life 2 open source code? i might get it for C++ practice

.. No. Half life one is completely difriend then portal 1. It has a difrience in time of 8 years.

hmmm....

Yes, thats right. You'll notice that it takes many of it's mechanics from other games, and it's engine is a modded version of Quakes. Plus the maps of outside are just more modded variants of other PC games like DOOM.

then half life was nothing but a programming test?

Skattz you are starting to piss me off when you spout incorrect information. Portal came out as a result of a student game known as "Narbacular Drop" back in 2005. Half Life came out in 1997 as a way to compete with games like Quake. Theres a big time difference between the two, and Hl was made before Portal. Valve even hired the students who made Narbacular drop to be the main devs on Portal.

actually that is true but half life story is derived from portal. the planning for portal started in 1995
